When you lose your Visual Studio perks after an email addess change
15 Oct 2026
Perhaps you worked for ABCDE Corporation, and it just got bought out by VWXYZ Corporation, and last night they changed your email address from JaneDoe@ABCDE.com to JaneDoe@VWXYZ.com in Microsoft Entra ID.
Hey, wait a minute!
- Why are all the paid features grayed out in the Visual Studio (“VS”) IDE desktop software?
- Why is your license level back down to the free default of
Stakeholderin all of your Azure DevOps (“ADO”) subscriptions? - Where’s your old list of free Windows license keys?
Synchronization problem using individuals
The problem is almost certainly that you no longer have the same e-mail address listed in both of the following places:
VWXYZ Corporation’s Entra tenantVWXYZ Corporation’s Visual Studio subscriber list portal
Short term individual fix
The fix is for the VWXYZ Corporation to fix that sync.
- If the Entra team changed your email address in Entra, but if the VS subscription admin accidentally left you as
@ABCDE.comin the company’s VS subscriber list portal, then the VS subscription admin needs to catch up and fix your email address in the VS subscriber list portal.- Once the VS subscriber admin does that, everything should work again in about an hour.
- If the Entra team postponed plans to change your email address in Entra, but accidentally forgot to tell the VS portal admin to stop, then the VS subscription admin needs to roll their change back within the VS subscriber list portal (or the Entra team needs to catch up).
- Once one of them does that, everything should work again in about an hour.
Long term solution using groups
Of course, accidents don’t have to be a problem at all! So encourage your company’s VS subscriber admin to switch away from manually listing individual email addresses in the VS portal at all.
- (Note: interestingly, after converting to Entra-group-based assignment, all staff might experience the blip described in this article for up to a few extra hours – up to 24 – than with individual-email-address-based VS subscription license assignment. However, it’s worth the slightly longer autosync window, because it guarantees that no employee will get accidentally forgotten altogether.)
